Remember when disks actually were floppy?

Interesting story on the BBC news website about how the US nuclear weapons force still uses obsolete technology and 8-inch floppy disks.

“This system remains in use because, in short, it still works,” Pentagon spokeswoman Lt Col Valerie Henderson told the AFP news agency.

It reminds me of the old version 11 of Herschel, which just refuses to die.  And because it works on Windows 10 it will live on for ever to give us support nightmares!

If you’re using version 11, remember version 12 will happily run alongside 11, sharing exactly the same datafiles.  So you can have both running at once, even on the same PC.

Moving to 12 really is a zero-risk move.  Just let us know and we’ll help you with the installation.

Or, if you want something more interesting to do, read “Command and Control” by Eric Scholosser.  “The minute-by-minute story of an accident at a missile silo in rural Arkansas, where a single crew struggled to prevent the explosion of the most powerful nuclear warhead ever built by the United States”.  Rather disturbingly, it’s all true.
